Okay, who wants to hear a really good Thanksgiving joke? Spoiler: You don’t have a choice, because we’re gonna tell it no matter what!

*Ahem*

What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?

A pumpkin pi

Now that we’ve gotten that out of our system, it’s time to dig into this week’s In the Know! FYI – since it’s such a short week, this edition is going to cover this week and next week, so don’t forget to check back here after break, too.

P.S. Is your club or student organization hosting an event soon? Maybe you have some important or exciting news to share with your fellow students? Get the word out! Email your In the Know submissions to Sarah at heikkins@strose.edu by Thursday to get featured in the next edition.

What’s New and Next:

It’s almost Thanksgiving Break! You’ve only got two days of classes this week, Golden Knights. If you live on campus, this is your reminder that residence halls are closing Wednesday, November 24, at 10 a.m. and will reopen Sunday, November 28, at 10 a.m. Remember that you can’t stay in the dorms over break unless you’ve already made arrangements with the Office of Residence Life or you live in Centennial Hall or a College-owned apartment!

Want to get tested before you head home for the holiday? We’ve got you covered! You can sign up here to get a COVID test before leaving campus. Testing will be done on Monday, November 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Tuesday, November 23, from 9 to 11 a.m. These tests are not meant to be used for travel, but if you want to have some peace of mind before visiting with family, come get your test done! We’ll also be offering tests when you get back from break, too – sign up here for those tests.

Thinking about graduate school? Graduate Admissions is holding a special information session just for our Saint Rose students on graduate school on December 1 at 3 p.m. Register for the session here. If you can’t make that session, there’s a virtual open house on December 2 at 5:30 p.m. During that session, there will also be a special session for those interested in Project THRIVE, a federally-funded program for those pursuing a master’s degree in special education or school psychology. (If you get in to the THRIVE cohort, most of your tuition is covered.)

An important reminder from ITS: You should have received an email message with a link to our annual Student Technology Survey administered through Survey Monkey. ITS is looking for feedback so that we can improve our quality and level of service to students. Before you head home, take a few minutes to complete the survey. This is a great opportunity for students to share their experience and voice their opinions!

We’ve got holiday merch!!! Yeah, that’s right – the Alumni Association Store is stocked up with Saint Rose holiday merch that’ll get you even more excited for the holidays than you are already. We’re talking teddy bears, comfy PJs, and a mug that’s just begging to be filled with hot chocolate and marshmallows. The best part? Everything (yes, everything) in the Store will be 25% off on Black Friday. Check it out here!

Adopt a family for the holidays! The Office of Spiritual Life needs your help to make the season a little brighter with a holiday gift drive. Here’s how it works:

  • Stop by the Sanctuary to pick up a gift tag;
  • Go out and buy a gift;
  • Bring the gift back wrapped and with the tag attached by December 9.

Donate to the Pajama Drive! Keep the kindness flowing by bringing new children’s pajamas (sizes newborn to 6T) to the Sanctuary. The Office of Spiritual Life will be collecting donations until December 9 – all donations will go to children experiencing homelessness in the Capital Region. Questions? Reach out to Joan Horgan at horganj@strose.edu.

Reminders:

Now that you’ve started registering for classes … please send us a copy of your vaccine card ASAP or you won’t be able to register! Send your copy to covidresults@strose.edu.

Need to de-stress? The Office of Spiritual Life’s got you covered! Join them Monday at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary for a beginner-friendly yoga class. Just bring your mask and a yoga mat (or borrow one of ours!). Questions? Email Joan Horgan at horganj@strose.edu.

Going to the ATM just got way more convenient: Saint Rose has partnered with SEFCU to bring a Video Teller Machine (VTM) to campus for the use of all community members.

Here are the hours:
Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Weekends 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Certain holidays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bank conveniently on campus right from a SEFCU Video Teller Machine (VTM). Talk to a live teller seven days a week! Learn more about SEFCU banking here.

Want to take over our instagram? Show our followers what a typical day in YOUR life looks like. Reach out to Sarah Heikkinen at heikkins@strose.edu with your name, major, year, and a few reasons why you want to show off what you do at Saint Rose!

Download the RAVE Guardian app! Our number one priority is your health and safety, which is why we are requiring that all of our students download Rave Guardian, a mobile safety app. Learn more about how to download the app here.

And don’t forget to sign up for RAVE Alerts: Saint Rose uses the RAVE Alert system to quickly communicate emergency information, like weather alerts, closings, delays, and other serious situations, to our students, faculty, and staff. If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up to receive the alerts through Banner.

When I say “mask,” you say, “up!” This is your weekly reminder that you need to mask 👏 up 👏 when you’re inside all College buildings, regardless of your vaccination status. Please make sure your mask is completely covering your mouth and nose – they’re not doing a whole lot if they’re under your chin! Stay up-to-date with the COVID-19 Dashboard.

Santa Hunt at the Neil Hellman Library! The week of November 29, origami Santas will be hidden throughout the library. If you find one, bring him to the Reference Desk to receive a special treat. Santa is yours to keep! Happy Hunting!

Reminder! Tomorrow is the last day to withdraw from second half-semester classes.

Need some extra study help before finals? Our tutors are offering in-person and online tutoring options for students. Check the Navigate app to see what’s available!

Study safely, please! With finals right around the corner, we wanted to give you a quick refresher on the library’s COVID protocols:

  • Please don’t move furniture or chairs to sit together – they’re configured to be 3 feet apart to maintain proper social distancing.
  • Wear your mask at all times – make sure it’s covering your nose AND mouth!
  • They’re still not allowing food in the library, but drinks with covered tops are okay – just take a sip, then put your mask back on.

Need a quiet place to study? The 3rd floor of the Neil Hellman Library is dedicated to silent study. We’ve got a variety of seating waiting for you, including tables, cubicles, and comfy chairs. We also have six individual study rooms (first come, first served) – get a key at the circulation desk. Visit the library website for hours and more info.

Looking for another study spot on campus? Check out our list of Study Stops.

A shop for our community: Last week, Saint Rose students officially opened the Golden Knight Shop, an on-campus pop-up that will offer no- or low-cost food and clothing to the Saint Rose community. We’re so proud of our Golden Knights! Learn more about the Shop on our blog

Saint Rose student Sarah Sharkey staffs the Golden Knight Shop.

That’s a lotta pasta! For the second year, students in the Saint Rose Sales Club organized the Pasta Grab Challenge, an effort to collect boxes of pasta to donate to several Capital Region food pantries and other organizations that support our neighbors in need. Last week, Price Chopper donated 2,500 pounds of pasta to the club, pushing them over their original goal of 2,500 pounds. As of Friday, the club collected 5,430 pounds of pasta to donate! Read more about it here.

Saint Rose women’s soccer advances to Round 3 of the NCAA Tournament! Congratulations to the Saint Rose women’s soccer team. The Golden Knights defeated Jefferson University in Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday on their home turf. Now it will be off to West Virginia to play Mercy College in Round 3 of the Tournament in a couple of weeks.

Get a free sexual wellness kit: Counseling and Health Services are now offering free sexual wellness kits to students! Call, email, or stop by their office to pick up your kit and any other sexual wellness goodies you need to enjoy yourselves (and each other) safely. Each kit includes finger and regular condoms, dental dams, and lube. Email counseling@strose.edu or healthservices@strose.edu for more information.

Help us stop the spread! We’re gonna keep saying it every week, but the only way we’ll get through this next wave of the pandemic is by working together! Keep yourself and your friends safe by properly wearing your masks inside (we’re talking mouth AND nose covered, people), limiting contact with people outside of your bubble, and checking the restart website for updates. If you or someone you know has been exposed to COVID-19, email covidresults@strose.edu so we can help you figure out what to do next.

COVID Emotional Support Hotline: This past year has been rough, especially with all the changes we’ve seen on campus. If you need immediate support, the New York State Department of Health offers a COVID-19 Emotional Support Hotline at 844.863.9314.

The Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center is now on campus: The CVSVC’s advocacy services will be offered in the Counseling Center every Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. Their confidential Campus Coordinator will be there to explain your rights under Title IX, help students get extra time on assignments or change their classes/housing, answer your questions on reporting sexual and/or interpersonal violence, and help connect you with a counselor. Make an appointment today by contacting Amanda at 518.447.7100 or Amanda.Wingle@albanycountyny.gov.

Your mental health matters. The College’s Counseling Center is always here for you when you need support, whatever that looks like. Follow them on Instagram @csrcounselingctr for mental health and self care tips at @csrcounselingctr! You can also learn more about the services offered by our counselors here.
