It’s time for the second shot! If you got your first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine on September 9, it’s time for shot No. 2. We’ll be holding our second vaccine clinic on Thursday, September 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. You should have received an email from Capital Region Pharmacy with a reminder and your appointment time, so check your email! If your first appointment was after 4 p.m., plan to come anytime between 1 to 4 p.m. as the clinic will end at 4 p.m.

Speaking of the vaccine clinic…we need student volunteers to help out! Sign up to volunteer here.

We’re looking for models! We’ll be taking some student portraits tomorrow afternoon for Saint Rose marketing, and we want YOU to be there. If you’re free from 3 to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow (Monday, September 27), email marketing@strose.edu. Come as you are, bonus points if you bring some Saint Rose swag to wear!

What if you could write a note to save a life? The Counseling Center is creating a student-made visual in recognition of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Students are asked to take a moment to write a note of encouragement, care, understanding, or support to someone who may be in need. Sticky notes must be turned in to the Counseling Center by Monday, September 27. The Counseling Center will also be collecting notes on the Campus Green on Tuesday, September 28, from noon to 2 p.m. We hope to see you there! Thank you to those that have already participated by submitting beautiful messages of hope 💛

Rose Record Label is looking for artists! Saint Rose’s student-run record label is looking for graphic designers, digital artists, and photographers who are interested in working with artists to create graphics like merch designs and album covers, as well as promotional content for the label. This is a great opportunity for visual artists who want to work with musicians and start building up their resume and portfolio! For more information, reach out to Mykaela at worthemm071@strose.edu

Keep your stuff safe: The last thing any of us wants is to worry about our personal belongings being damaged in an emergency. Luckily, the College offers personal property insurance for students! This coverage is worldwide, and covers your belongings in the event of accidental damage, theft, water damage, and fire damage. This includes smartphones, other electronics, clothing, books, shoes, bikes, musical instruments, jewelry, and university-rented equipment. Purchase personal property insurance here. Questions? Reach out to HF&C at 866.535.0456 or student@haylor.com.

Looking for a job or internship? Sign up for one of the Career Center’s Lunch and Learn Virtual Employer Sessions! This is a great opportunity to connect with local AND non-local recruiters, learn about the hiring process, and, most important, get hired. This week, you can meet with folks from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, NBT Bancorp, and the Crossroads Center for Children – scroll down to the calendar section for more details! You’ll find a full schedule of employers (with Zoom links!) on the HireStrose website.

Download the RAVE Guardian app! Our number one priority is your health and safety, which is why we are requiring that all of our students download RAVE Guardian, a mobile safety app. Learn more about how to download the app here

And don’t forget to sign up for RAVE Alerts: Saint Rose uses the RAVE Alert system to quickly communicate emergency information, like weather alerts, closings, delays, and other serious situations, to our students, faculty, and staff. If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up to receive the alerts through Banner.

When I say “mask,” you say, “up!” This is your weekly reminder that you need to mask 👏 up 👏 when you’re inside all College buildings, regardless of your vaccination status. Please make sure your mask is completely covering your mouth and nose – they’re not doing a whole lot if they’re under your chin! Stay up-to-date with the COVID-19 Dashboard.

Know the rules: Reminder that the new Student Handbook is up on the website. Let it be your guide if you ever need a helping hand!

Cleaning out your closet? Why not donate your gently used clothes (or maybe even that shirt you bought but just haven’t gotten around to wearing yet) to our clothing drive for Things of My Very Own? Our Community Service team is looking for socks, coats, sweaters, gloves, shirts, and pants in youth sizes 12-20. Donations will be accepted in the EAC and the Sanctuary through October 15.

Get in the swing of things! The Women’s Golf Team has an open roster spot currently, and they are looking for someone who has a golfing background to join them for the upcoming fall season. This is a great opportunity to improve your game, be part of a team, and play beautiful courses! Interested? Please contact Matt McPhillips (mcphillm@strose.edu) for further details as soon as possible.

The EAC pool is open! To keep everyone safe, we’re requiring that any students who want to come to open swim hours sign up ahead of time. You can sign up to swim here. Before you do, make sure you read through the re-opening guidelines.

Apply for Intercultural Pathways! Intercultural Pathways is a student development program for first-year students, brought to you by the ALANA is Leadership Mentorship and Ambassadors of Inclusion Programs. See Dr. Galen Gomes in the Student Development Suite in the EAC for further information or to apply. Learn more about Intercultural Pathways here.

SEFCU is officially on campus: You can’t miss it – SEFCU’s mobile branch will be parked outside the EAC every Monday and Wednesday. The mobile branch is equipped with an ATM for cash withdrawals, teller stations, loan stations, and so much more! Learn more about the services they’re offering here

IMPORTANT – Don’t forget to complete your required online prevention education courses: At Saint Rose, we believe in the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment. The College has a responsibility per federal and state regulations to provide each student with education and awareness training in the areas of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. We have partnered with EVERFI to provide trainings that will help us all be informed on topics vital to achieving our goal. As part of our comprehensive prevention program all new/incoming students are required to complete the following online trainings: Sexual Assault Prevention and AlcoholEdu (for new undergraduate students) and Sexual Assault Prevention (for new graduate students). This online education will empower students to make well-informed decisions about issues that affect their years at Saint Rose and beyond.

New/incoming students should have received an email in their Saint Rose account with the subject: The College of Saint Rose automated-message@everfi-foundry.net. Please do not delete this message because it contains the link to begin your assignment(s). Please contact Amanda Bastiani at bastiana@strose.edu if you have not received the email to start these prevention courses online.

Thank you for your ongoing support in helping to make our campus community safe! If you have any questions, or you are looking for ways to get involved, please contact Amanda Bastiani, Title IX Coordinator and Director of Prevention Education and Response, at bastiana@strose.edu. Follow @saintroselovebetter on Instagram for 24/7 access to information and resources. Find more information regarding our policies, reporting options, and resources here.

We’re sure you’ve spent some time getting to know your professors, but have you thought about learning more about the staff that keeps the College’s wheels turning every day, too? “Get to Know Saint Rose” is a weekly Q&A with a different Saint Rose staff member to help you learn more about the resources available to you while you’re here.

Meet David Alexander from the Athletics Department!

David Alexander, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications.

Fast Facts:

Name: David Alexander

What he does: Assistant Athletics Director for Communications

Where he works: Athletics Department

How long he’s been at Saint Rose: 30 years

His alma mater: University of Rhode Island (undergraduate); Saint Rose (graduate)

Fun fact: David has a twin sister!

Get to know David:

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love working on a college campus where there is always a great deal of energy from young people who have a fresh perspective on so many things. Game day is always exciting for us in athletics. I also find it symbolic that my office is as close to the library as it is to our gym.

What’s something you want students to know about you?

I live with my girlfriend and her children, along with three cats: Jackson, Frank, and Chicken. I was raised in Rhode Island and went back to school to earn my master’s in education from Saint Rose 30 years after I completed my undergraduate degree in journalism at the University of Rhode Island. One of the ways I put myself through URI was working in an ice cream factory, spending most of my summer days in a freezer.

If you could give students one piece of advice to carry them through their time here, what would it be?

To understand that getting an education is a proactive endeavor. It is therefore imperative to get to know your professors, to seek out help from the array of services provided on campus, to treat everyone with respect, and to appreciate the importance of being sound academically. Also, embrace the notion that selflessness and humility resonate with everyone.

Thanks, David!

Neil Hellman Library COVID protocols explained: Thanks to the many students who are following the library’s COVID rules. They’re happy to see you all using the library! However, they wanted to give you a quick refresher on their COVID protocols:

  • No moving of furniture/chairs to sit together – they are configured to be three feet apart.
  • Wear a mask at all times – make sure it’s covering your nose AND mouth!
  • No food, but drinks with covered tops are OK – take a sip, then put your mask back on.

Let’s all do our part to keep everyone on campus healthy!

Speaking of the library, did you know they have 60 computers (both Macs and PCs) that you can use? If you’re a laptop person, you can borrow one at the circulation desk to use while in the library (first come, first served). Need printing? The library has four printers (two with color printing) that are also copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Check out the library website for hours and online content.

You are not alone: Thank you to all of our students who have submitted notes of encouragement to the Counseling Center for their student-led visual project, “What if you could write a note to save a life?” in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month! We’re so inspired by all of the notes you’ve submitted so far – thank you for sharing the love!

Shout out to our tie dye crew! Thanks to everyone who came out this past Thursday for our tie dye event to support Things of My Very Own, a Schenectady-based nonprofit that provides crisis intervention services for children impacted by abuse. Thanks for always being willing to make a difference, Saint Rose!

Help us stop the spread! We’re going to keep saying it every week, but the only way we’ll get through this next wave of the pandemic is by working together! Keep yourself and your friends safe by properly wearing your masks inside (we’re talking mouth AND nose covered, people), limiting contact with people outside of your bubble, and checking the restart website for updates.
