WELCOME BAAAAACK!!! We missed you, Golden Knights!

We know your inbox is probably bursting with emails since the fall semester starts TOMORROW (!!!), but we hope you’ll take a sec to read the first In the Know of the 2023-24 school year.

If you’re new here (or maybe just need a quick refresher), In the Know is Saint Rose’s weekly student newsletter where we share all the campus news that matters to YOU every Sunday. BTW, we also share all of this juicy info on our Instagram story every Monday, so make sure you follow us at @collegeofstrose if you aren’t already!

*deep breath*

Okay, let’s get into it.

P.S. Do you have any announcements or events to share with other students? Get the word out! Email your In the Know submissions to Sarah at intheknow@strose.edu by 5 p.m. on Thursdays to get featured in the next edition.

The Week of Welcome is back and better than ever! And believe us, it’s gonna be a good one. Let’s see what’s on the schedule…a first-day-of-school photo booth, outdoor laser tag, corn hole tournaments, off-campus trips, free treats…oh my! Head to the Calendar section for the full schedule.

Reach Out Saint Rose is right around the corner! Have you signed up for our annual Day of Service on September 9 yet? What are you waiting for?! Be a part of this amazing campus tradition by signing up with your team, club, roommates, or just on your own to help make an impact on our community by serving our dear neighbors. We’ll be working with local organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, the Underground Railroad Project, the Red Bookshelf, the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, and more. Help us hit our goal of 400+ volunteers – sign up here!

Self-care starts NOW: End your first week by getting back in balance at the Sanctuary’s first yoga class of the semester! Join them this Thursday, August 31 at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary. No experience (or yoga mat) needed!

Keep the self-care going with our resident therapy dog 🐶 That’s right! Eli, the Neil Hellman Library therapy dog, is back! Stop by to see him on Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Library food zone. Take it from us, Eli gives the best puppy snuggles!

Coming soon…The Career Carnival 🎟️ Join the Office of Career Services for a fun afternoon filled with career-themed games, prizes, tie-dye, and carnival snacks as we celebrate the beginning of another school year. The Career Carnival will take place on Thursday, September 7 on the Campus Green from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Career Services will also be raffling off a number of exciting items, including a JBL Charge 4 portable speaker!

Make music at Saint Rose! Do you want to join a Saint Rose music ensemble this year? Or maybe you want to take private lessons? Let our music industry team know! Fill out this interest form ASAP so your information is shared with the Chorale, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Rose Record Label directors, and instructors waiting to make music with you. P.S. Get to know our neighborhood at Meet, Munch, & More! The Midtown Pine Hills Committee is bringing MMM back on Sunday, September 17 with a pop-up barbeque. For years, MMM has brought college students and other neighbors in Midtown Pine Hills (that’s where we are!) together to meet, share food and fun, and learn about each other and the neighborhood. This year, the Midtown Pine Hills Committee will also be holding a Resource Fair at MMM that will feature materials and info about local resources available to help educate our neighbors. The MMM barbeque will take place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Madison Park (at Madison Ave and Ontario Street).

Reminders from Res Life: Before you get too caught up in the excitement of the semester, our friends at Res Life have a few important deadlines you should add to your to-do list!

  • Remember to submit your Room Condition Report (RCR) on MyHousing by this Friday, September 1 at 4 p.m.
  • If you live in Centennial Hall, the last day to change or drop your meal plan is Friday, September 1 at 4 p.m.

The Office of Academic Advising will be open this week from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to see students on a walk-in basis for any schedule change requests. You’ll find them on the 3rd floor of Saint Joseph Hall!

Hey, new students! You should’ve received an email about this just a few hours ago, but we figured we’d give you a little nudge, too. All new undergrad and grad students must complete the Voices for Change training, an online education program designed to empower you to make well-informed decisions about issues related to sexual harassment and misconduct, alcohol and drugs, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and other issues that you may face in college. This training MUST be completed by October 15. Check your email for the link to the training.

Serving the dear neighbor across the globe: This summer, 17 students from each of the Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph’s member campuses traveled to Le Puy, France to learn more about the charism, or spiritual gifts, of our founding sisters. In case you didn’t know, The College of Saint Rose was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1920, so this pilgrimage was a big deal for the Saint Rose students who were able to go!

And in early August, four students from our Communications Sciences & Disorders program traveled to Punta Gorda, Belize with a group of students from Duquesne University in partnership with Therapy Abroad. While they were there, they gained experience helping local children with communication disorders related to developmental disabilities (and got to learn more about the local culture in Punta Gorda, too!). Watch a recap of the trip here, courtesy of Therapy Abroad.

Let’s hear it for our new nursing students! Nine Saint Rose nursing students received their white coats during an August 20 ceremony at the College. The white coat ceremony marks a special moment in students’ nursing studies at Saint Rose as they prepare to begin clinical hours with St. Peter’s Hospital College of Nursing or Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. The students’ family, friends, College faculty, administrators from Saint Rose, and the College’s clinical partners attended the ceremony. Congrats to Lauren Ernst, Grace Gardner, Bianca Anne Lee, Halle McIntyre, Olivia Mendoza, Marley Ogle, Emily Robbie, Madeline Rounds, and Tristan Wood!

Join the Counseling Center every Thursday at 1 p.m. for support. The first meeting will be this Thursday, August 31. Questions? Call the Counseling Center at 518.454.5200.

Get support from the Albany County Crime Victim & Sexual Violence Center (CVSVC). The CVSVC supports and serves students who are victims/survivors of sexual assault, stalking, domestic violence, and other forms of interpersonal violence. Their free and comprehensive services include, but are not limited to Title IX advocacy, referral services, counseling, and criminal advocacy to crime victims. Amanda Wingle, a representative from the Center, will be available to meet with students as a confidential resource in-person (or remotely) on Mondays 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Counseling Center.  Students can email Alice directly at amange.wingle@albanycountyny.gov to schedule an appointment or simply drop in. All CVSVC services are confidential, meaning their advocates won’t contact the College or law enforcement without your explicit consent.

Download Liberate! This meditation app is a fantastic resource for Black students looking to develop a daily meditation habit. For more resources for BIPOC mental health, visit the Counseling Center website!
