The National Honors Society for History

Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of History through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among Historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of History together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist Historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.

Since its inauguration as a national honors society in 1921, Phi Alpha Theta has grown to more than eight hundred thirty-nine chapters in fifty states, more than any other accredited four-year college honor society. The total number of initiates since its inception is more than 350,000. Phi Alpha Theta enjoys the distinction of being one of three original departmental honor societies with membership in the Association of College Honors Societies.

The Alpha Lamba Omega chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at the College of Saint Rose was founded in 2005. The chapter has inducted nearly one hundred students in four short years. To qualify for induction, undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 courses) in History and have achieved both a minimum GPA of 3.1 in History and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. Graduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master's Degree in History and maintain a GPA of better than 3.5
