History and Political Science Courses

Most HIS and POS courses for History and Political Science majors are four-credit courses. They may be offered either as four-credit courses or as three-credit courses with a required one-credit Advanced Research Lab.

All upper-division (300- and 400- level) HIS and POS courses, except HIS/POS 490 Directed Readings, HIS/POS 494 Field & Internship Experience, and HIS/POS 499 Independent Study, fulfill the writing-intensive requirement; and all require at least six credits of lower-level (100 and 200) level HIS/POS courses as a prerequisite. Students are encouraged to pursue Internship and/or Field Experience opportunities as part of their required general elective credits.

Students are expected to register for HIS/POS 100 in their first year to acquire a methodological introduction to their program of study.

Advanced Research Lab

For majors, each upper-division History and Political science course that is offered for three credits is linked to an advanced research lab designed to promote the development of research skills. Students will be trained in advanced database retrieval, archival research, interpretation of print indices, bibliographic citation, annotation, and historiographical analysis. These skills are necessary for locating, interpreting, and synthesizing documents that are used to craft coherent written historical and political arguments, and for developing classroom presentations based on social scientific research principles.
