Research
Grants
A limited amount of money is available to help graduate students
defray the cost of research projects. Summaries of the projects
and itemized lists of expenses must be approved by faculty advisors
and Graduate and Continuing Education Admissions before they are
submitted to the Director of Financial Aid. Research grants will
usually not exceed $100.
Tuition Assistance
Program (TAP)
(Twelve credit hours per semester is full-time for TAP). New
York Sate residents are encouraged to apply for the New York State
Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). To apply for TAP, students must
initially submit the FAFSA. The New York State Higher Education
Services Corporation (NYSHESC) determine TAP eligibility after they
have received the FAFSA. NYSHESC will determines TAP eligibility
and inform students and The College of Saint Rose of the TAP award.
TAP eligibility is based upon the New York State Net Taxable Income.
Annual TAP awards range from $50 to $550 for graduate students attending
The college of Saint Rose. Eligible students may receive a maximum
of eight semesters of full-time TAP funding as undergraduates, and
an additional eight semesters as graduate students. Full-time means
at least twelve (12) credit hours per semester.
Full-Time and Par-Time Graduate
Students
Subsidized
Federal Stafford Loan (FSL)
The Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan is available to students enrolled
in at least six credits and who have demonstrated financial need
through submission of the FAFSA. Loans are borrowed through private
banks chosen at the discretion of the borrowers. Graduate students
may borrow up to $8,500 annually. The maximum aggregate borrowing
limit for the FSL is $138,000 for graduate study.
Repayment of the FSL may be deferred while borrowers are enrolled
for at least six credits per semester. During the In-School deferment
period, the federal government pays the interest on the FSL. Repayment
of the FSL begins six months after borrowers cease at least half-time
enrollment. Other deferment options are limited to remaining in
school, graduate fellowship/rehabilitation training, unemployment
and economic hardship.
Students who are borrowing FSL funds for the first time must complete
a Federal Stafford Loan Entrance Interview component before receiving
FSL proceeds. The Entrance Interview is designed to inform borrowers
of the rights and responsibilities inherent in borrowing FSL funding.
The Financial Aid Office will notify borrowers of the procedures
for completing this process.
To secure funds through the FSL, borrowers must submit a Master
Promissory Note (MPN) for a Federal Stafford Loan. The MPN must
be submitted only once and is valid for up to ten years of higher
education. If a MPN has previously been submitted by FSL borrowers,
they need not submit another for subsequent FSL borrowing that is
within ten years of the initial MPN submission. For initial MPN
processing and subsequent certification of FSL eligibility, the
Financial Aid Office will transmit eligibility information to NYSHESC.
Eligibility will be determined based upon the enrollment status,
period of attendance and expected graduation date indicated on the
FAFSA.
When FSL borrowers cease to be enrolled for at least six credits,
they are required to complete the FSL exit interview. The Exit Interview
is designed to remind FSL borrowers of the rights and responsibilities
inherent in borrowing FSL funding. The Financial Aid Office will
inform FSL borrowers of the procedures for completing the Exit Interview
process.
Unsubsidized
Federal Stafford Loans (UFSL)
The Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan is available to students
who do not demonstrate financial need for the Subsidized Federal
Stafford Loan. Also, graduate students are eligible to borrow $10,000
per year in addition to their FSL eligibility. For the UFSL, the
government does not subsidize the interest on the loan. Therefore,
while students are in school and deferring payment of the UFSL,
the interest on the loan must either be paid periodically or capitalized.
If capitalization of interest is selected, the interest will be,
in most cases, added to the principal balance of the UFSL at the
time the borrowers enter repayment.
