Criminal Justice

The Sociology Department offers a stimulating major in criminal justice in which students gain a strong background in the study of societal issues and sociological theory and research, as well as an understanding of how societies work and how they affect the behavior of groups and individuals. The major in criminal justice explores crime and the American justice system as a part of the larger society and within a political and socioeconomic context.

As a Saint Rose criminal justice graduate, you will possess the essential analytical and technical skills necessary for understanding the criminal justice system.

THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
When you graduate from Saint Rose with a degree in criminal justice, you will be well trained in the diverse areas of your field, making you a more marketable candidate to potential employers. In addition to the College’s intensive liberal education core curriculum, criminal justice majors complete 57 credits of course work in their major, as well as six credits of elective coursework.

Seminar Courses
Criminal justice majors complete three required seminar courses focusing on the issues they will face after graduation, including the many career opportunities available to them. Seminar assignments include field observations, interviews with practitioners and preparation for guest presenters.

  • Seminar: Occupations—The goal of this seminar
is to raise students’ awareness of and assist them
in practical preparation for employment and/or graduate work.
  • Seminar: Ethics—This course exposes students to
some of the critical ethical issues they will face
    as field practitioners.
  • Senior Seminar:This capstone course helps
students integrate the knowledge and skills they
have acquired in their major coursework.
FIELD EXPERIENCE
Since career opportunities within the field of criminal justice are broad, internships help students focus on an area in which they might like to specialize. The College’s location in Albany provides a wide variety of field experience opportunities, including those in businesses, government, and public and private agencies.

Examples of sites where criminal justice majors have completed field experiences include:

  • New York State Department of HealthPrivate law firms
  • New York State Police Department

MODERATE PRICE AND AGGRESSIVE FINANCIAL AID
The College of Saint Rose has one of the lowest tuitions of all New York state private colleges and we offer a variety of scholarships, including multicultural and academic talent. More than 90% of our students receive several forms of financial aid.

Students who major in criminal justice will find a challenging program, not only in terms of the skills they must acquire, but also in terms of the critical perspective on society that they must develop. They will meet these challenges, however, under the close guidance of a caring and supportive faculty.
