Department of Literacy
and Special Education
The Department of Literacy and Special
Education has a long history of preparing effective and outstanding
teachers. The faculty has extensive experience in a variety of public
and private school settings and maintain ties to these classrooms
through their supervision of student field experience, collaborative
and consultative relationships with a number of local school districts,
and their own research.
The undergraduate program in special education leads to dual initial
teaching certification in early childhood or elementary education
and special education. The graduate programs in Literacy prepare
master teachers of literacy to work as classroom teachers, specialists,
consultants or program coordinators. The graduate programs in Special
Education prepare individuals to work as consultant teachers, resource
room teachers or special class teachers. Program requirements vary
according to student background. The graduate programs in both literacy
and special education may be used in part to meet the NYSED requirements
for initial or professional certification.
