Technology Information
The College of Saint Rose currently has approximately 1,100 computers on campus
with just over 50% of designated specifically for student use. We offer
19 computer labs including the Lima Hall computer lab which is open 24 hours
a day, seven days a week. Of all the computers on campus, about 10% of them are
Macintosh with the majority of them housed in Picotte Hall and the Music Building.
The other 90% of computers run on the Windows platform. About 15% of all computers
are laptops with three dedicated classrooms of laptop computers. Students can sign
out wireless laptop computers in the Neil Hellman Library.
Every room on campus including classrooms and residence hall rooms has network ports
to allow students to connect to the College's high speed network. The College also
provides wireless networking that currently covers approximately 70% of the campus.
( Wireless Map)The goal is to have almost 100% coverage within two years. The network
is protected with aggressive antivirus and SPAM filtering systems. Students are
provided with free antivirus software that they can download to their personally
owned computers.
Each student is given an e-mail account, online file storage, computer logon account,
print management account and Blackboard account, all of which use the same user
name and password. Students are given 225 free prints each semester with additional
prints charged at seven cents per page. Blackboard is the College's web based course
management and portal system. Faculty post course content, discussions boards, recorded
lectures, assessments and assignments on Blackboard so that students can have access
to these materials when needed. Blackboard courses may use a variety of technologies
including video streaming, blogs, wikis and podcasting. We are in the process of
upgrading the file storage capacity of the network to 14 Terabytes.
The ITS Media Center provides Audio/Visual services that support the teaching efforts
of the College. This includes the development and support of "state of the art"
media resources, systems, and equipment found in all our academic classrooms. We
also provide Audio/Video capabilities for certain types of special events that take
place around the campus. Our professional staff maintains the functionality of equipment
and provides instruction in the operational uses of Audio/Visual equipment, such
as Smart Classroom technology, video camcorders, microphones, and various other
technologies for speaking engagement events on campus.
ITS offers another service called Mediasite. Mediasite allows the sharing of multimedia
across the campus via the network or across the world via the internet. Instructors
can present to a class in their usual manor while the Mediasite records their actions
and voice as well as any data they wish to be seen. Users viewing a presentation
will see a video window featuring the Instructor and a larger window showing the
data (computer image, document camera, etc...). Mediasite can be streamed on-demand,
live or both. There is even the ability for the audience to interact through email
and online poll questions.
The College now offers a new service called the One Card System. This system provides
each student with an ID card that they can use in various places. Students will
be able to use this card to access certain buildings such as Brubacher Hall and
Morris Hall. It will be used as their dining service card to purchase food. It will
be their main ID card for identifying who they are. And lastly it will be used to
purchase print jobs in open computer labs using print release stations.
