The Massry Family

ONE OF THE CAPITAL REGION’S MOST ACTIVE BUSINESS AND PHILANTHROPIC FAMILIES, THE MASSRYS HAVE IMMERSED THEMSELVES IN COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND CHARITABLE AFFAIRS. MORRIS AND HIS WIFE ESTHER HAVE RESIDED IN THE CAPITAL REGION SINCE 1950 AND HAVE FIVE DAUGHTERS AND ONE SON.

In 1962, Morris Massry transitioned from the retail clothing business to real estate investment, and today Morris and his son Norman are partners owning Tri City Rentals/Massry Realty Partners. For more than 30 years, Tri City Rentals has owned and operated premier apartment communities in the Capital District with their properties unified by their commitment to quality and promotion of a sense of neighborhood.

The family’s commitment to Saint Rose began when Norman Massry joined the College’s board of trustees in 1988. Today, Norman Massry is the second vice chair of the board and the longest-serving trustee. In that time, he has been part of the guiding force that has taken the College from a budget of $20 million in 1988 to the current budget of more than $85 million.

THE SUPPORT OF THE MASSRY FAMILY IS EVIDENT IN SEVERAL OF THE COLLEGE’S CAPITAL PROJECTS OVER THE PAST 16 YEARS, INCLUDING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW SCIENCE CENTER IN 1992, THE HUBBARD INTERFAITH SANCTUARY IN 1996 AND THE THELMA P. LALLY SCHOOL OF EDUCATION IN 2002. MOST RECENTLY, NORMAN MASSRY, WITH HIS WIFE MICKI, WAS ONE OF FOUR MAJOR DONORS WHO, THROUGH A CHALLENGE GIFT, HELPED TO RAISE THE REMAINING $1.5 MILLION NEEDED TO CONSTRUCT THE EVENTS AND ATHLETICS CENTER IN 2004.

At the completion of the “Advancing the Saint Rose Difference Campaign,” Norman Massry was presented with the “Spirit of Saint Rose Award” for his important and integral role in enabling the College to exceed the campaign goal and fulfill its educational mission and values. At commencement in December 2004, the College awarded Morris Massry an honorary doctoral degree for his high level of involvement in the community and his dedication to charitable causes throughout the Capital Region. At that same ceremony, Norman Massry’s daughter Julie received her master of business administration degree from Saint Rose, creating a special moment in which three generations of the Massry family shared the commencement stage. Today, Julie Massry Knox serves on the College’s board of associates and Julie’s husband Jimmy will graduate from the College’s graphic design program on May 12.

In the community, Morris Massry has served as general chairman of the United Way on three occasions and currently serves on the boards of Excelsior College, Proctor’s Theatre, Center for Disability Services and the State University at Albany Foundation. He previously served as president of the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home, Troy Jewish Community Center, St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and the Doane Stuart School, and has served on the boards of St. Mary’s Hospital and the Sage Colleges.
Given his dedication to giving back, it is no surprise that Morris Massry has received numerous accolades for his beneficence. Honors include the YMCA President’s Award, Rensselaer Regional Chamber of Commerce Ebbie Award, Albany Jewish Community Center Pillars of the Community

Award, Seton Health Caritas Award, State of Israel National Leadership Award, Daughters of Charity National Health System Heritage Award, Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award and The University at Albany Foundation Citizen Laureate, among many others. Morris Massry was inducted into the Capital Region Hall of Fame in 2003 and has served as the Troy Flag Day Grand Marshall.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Norman Massry also is committed to the ideal that one should give back to the community. He serves as board member and trustee of St. Peter’s Health Care Services, board member and treasurer at Seton Health Foundation, a member of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center board, United Jewish Federation endowment board and the Colonie Youth Center Foundation, and a trustee of Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. In addition, he chairs the State of Israel Bonds Capital Region Cabinet. He has chaired “Seton Health’s Investing in Caring” capital campaign and the Albany Jewish Community Center’s capital campaign. Norman Massry is a past member of the Roarke Center in Troy and the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce.

As has his father, Norman Massry has received numerous awards for his community service and charitable generosity, including the Vincentian Award from Seton Health Systems, the Hudson-Mohawk Association of Colleges and Universities Community Service Award, Equinox-Solstice Award, YMCA Presidents’ Award and the Albany Jewish Community Center Pillars Award.

Norman Massry holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bentley College, and he and his wife Micki have three children.
