2008 Thomas A. Manion
Distinguished Faculty Award
Claire Ziamandanis, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Spanish and Chair
of the Foreign Language Department and Faculty Advisor to Study
Abroad programs has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Thomas
A. Manion Distinguished Faculty Award. Claire has been a Spanish
professor at Saint Rose since 1992 and with an interest and belief
in foreign study, immediately became a strong proponent of study
abroad programs at the College.
Claire has mentored many of her students and encouraged them to
enrich their college experience through foreign study. Her students
have traveled to Spain, Russia, and Cuba, just to name a few. Claire
has been instrumental in the creation of three new programs at Saint
Rose; an International Spanish Certificate that is open to all majors,
a Latino Studies minor, and a Concentration in French and Spanish
for Childhood Education, Early Childhood and Special Education majors.
Claire also started an online workshop for her students studying
abroad, and for those just returning so everyone can have weekly
discussion topics. These discussions help those students abroad
adjust to their new culture and for others who are adjusting to
their return home.
Claire’s nominators stated that not only is she a leader
in the classroom, but you can often find her attending college athletic,
cultural, music and art events on campus. Claire has a dedication
to the College, which often shines through her students.
2008 Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. Patricia Fox, MD is the recipient of The College of Saint Rose
2008 Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1968, Pat earned her BA in Chemistry
from Saint Rose. She earned her MD from SUNY Upstate Medical University
and completed her General and Plastic Surgery training at Georgetown
University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Fox is a board certified plastic surgeon and an active member
of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. She is an active member
in four prestigious organizations; the American Cleft-Palate Craniofacial
Association, American College of Surgeons, American Society for
Laser Medicine and Surgery, and the Northeastern Society of Plastic
Surgeons.
Dr. Fox’s more than 20 years of skillful and compassionate
plastic surgical care to the Capital Region area was recognized
by St. Claire’s Hospital with the bestowal of their highest
honor, The Spirit of Healing award. Additionally, the Girl Scouts
Mohawk Pathways Council, Inc. acknowledged her commitment to the
ecology and environment of the Schenectady area by honoring her
with the Juliette Low Women of Distinction and Excellence Award.
Dr. Fox has donated her time annually to travel to the Dominican
Republic with an organized team of medical experts to run a free
clinic and operate on cleft-palate patients of all ages. Pat has
also given her time to her alma mater—she is currently an
active member of a new Saint Rose alumni group, The Doctors’
Guild, and has participated in a variety of alumni and College social
and fundraising events.
Pat Fox has taken the spirit of The College of Saint Rose and has
carried it to her immediate medical world, the local civic arena
and beyond.
