History/Political Science
(Master of Arts)
The College of Saint Rose graduate
program in History and Political Science is a part-time evening
program designed to provide a truly interdisciplinary examination
of the United States' history in its international context. Students
will gain an awareness of the many implications of policy making
as they learn about the social, economic, cultural, and historical
contexts within which political decisions are made. The curriculum
enables students to reflect on current domestic policy issues and
examine the international role and global involvement of America.
Furthermore, graduates of this program are qualified to continue
study on the doctoral level and pursue careers in federal, state,
and local
government, international organizations and agencies, colleges and
research institutions, museums, businesses, civic organizations,
and print and broadcast media outlets.
The Saint Rose Difference
The graduate program in History and Political Science focuses on
cutting-edge exploration of new ideas and trends both within academia
and throughout society. A Saint Rose master's degree in History
and Political Science conveys to potential employers that the graduates
are serious about their field of study.
In addition, this hybrid program enables students to receive instruction
encompassing the best of both History and Political Science. Since
the College emphasizes teaching rather than research, our faculty
is accessible and able to enhance every student's educational journey
and scholarship. The master's program includes a self-guided research
component that empowers students to pursue and develop research
skills that will be beneficial within their chosen careers. The
College also provides opportunities to earn credit through internships
and independent study.
Research
In the spring term, the History and Political Science graduate seminar
includes a required research component. Students learn a variety
of research skills while engaging in self-directed projects outside
the classroom.
Intership
History and Political Science students who are not already employed
in the field may earn up to six internship credits. Our faculty
encourages students to intern in both government and not-for-profit
organizations, enabling them to learn about the variety of opportunities
in their field. In addition, internships enable students to network
with professionals in the field and gain the experience necessary
to find employment upon graduation.
Career Opportunities
Students who pursue an advanced degree in History and Political
Science possess a thorough understanding of current policy issues,
new ideas, and trends within the discipline, and
have highly developed research and writing skills. Often, graduates
from this program find employment at the secondary school and two-year
college level, state and local government, and foundations and corporations
that work
with the public sector.
Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series
A unique feature of the History and Political Science department,
this lecture series brings a noted scholar to campus each spring.
Graduate students are encouraged to attend a discussion about the
speaker's topic following the lecture. Recently, James S. Donnelly,
Irish historian and author of The Great Irish Potato Famine, discussed
the advantages and detriments of the Irish "Celtic tiger"
economy. Alice Kessler-Harris, another speaker in the series, is
an author and professor of history from Rutgers University, and
specializes in the history of women and American labor.
Facilities
The College's Neil Hellman Library is an excellent resource for
students within this program, especially as they conduct their research
projects. The inter-library loan services provide access to materials
that might otherwise remain inaccessible, and the helpful and knowledgeable
staff is able to assist with any type of research. In addition,
the library offers several databases of information that encompass
a variety of topics and issues, Internet and wireless access, and
laptop computers for use within the building.
