Art Education
(B.S.)
THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
The dedicated faculty members in the art education program are committed
to putting the very best artists into the classroomartists
who love to create works of art and wish to share their talents
with children.
Through the mentoring guidance of your professors, you will develop
into a balanced combination of artist and teacher, prepared to help
children discover their own artistic talent. Through the art education
curriculum, you will learn how to design and deliver instruction
that effectively communicates to students the powerful and unique
role that art plays in helping us explore the world in which we
live.
As an art education major, you will complete courses in art, art
education, and the liberal arts, including three advanced courses
in your area of concentration, as well as studies in three other
media. Concentrations include painting and drawing, sculpture, printmaking,
and photography.
The BFA Option
Several students choose to pursue our BFA Option, which allows you
to complete the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art and then
return for a ninth semester after graduation to complete six credits
of Advanced Methods and Student Teaching on the graduate level.
FIELD EXPERIENCES
As an art education major at Saint Rose, you will complete a total
of 100 hours of field experience before you even begin student teaching.
- At the conclusion of your sophomore year, you will spend two
weeks working as a teachers aid in an elementary or middle
school art classroom while recording your observations in a journal.
After your experience is complete, you will discuss your observations
with a member of the faculty.
- In the semester before student teaching, you will spend 15 hours
teaching art in an elementary classroom where you will be videotaped
during each session. By reviewing the video in your Methods class,
you will identify ways in which to improve your teaching skills.
STUDENT TEACHING
As an art education student teacher, you will spend a full semester
in an elementary, middle or high school art classroom, actively
learning how to become the best art educator that you can be.
CAREERS AND GRADUATE SCHOOL
By the time you graduate, you will be able to express the importance
of art in communicating the values and ideas of the worlds
cultures, and the reasons why art is an important and necessary
part of every childs education.
Immediately after completing the program, some of our art education
graduates choose to work as instructors at summer museum art programs
or as master teachers assistants at the New York State Summer
School of Visual Arts before accepting a teaching position as an
elementary, middle or high school art teacher. While a graduate
degree is required for permanent certification, you may begin teaching
immediately after graduation in order to gain experience while pursuing
a masters degree. After earning your bachelors degree
in art education from Saint Rose, you will have a high-quality portfolio
that will serve you well when applying to masters programs
in studio art or art education. Many of our art education graduates
are enrolled at some of the top art schools, including:
- Kent State University
- Syracuse University
- University at Albany
- University of the Arts (Philadelphia)
In addition, many students choose to pursue a masters degree
in art education right here at Saint Rose. By enrolling in the Saint
Rose Art Education Graduate Program, you will pursue advanced study
under professors who are familiar with your work and have seen you
progress from an undergraduate art student to a skilled teacher
of art.
MODERATE PRICE AND
AGGRESSIVE FINANCIAL AID
The College of Saint Rose has one of the lowest tuitions of all
New York state private colleges and we offer a variety of scholarships,
including academic talent. More than 90% of our students receive
several forms of financial
aid. Students with outstanding portfolios containing work that
demonstrates superior ability and potential may qualify for Art
Talent Awards. Award amounts vary depending on the quality of a
students portfolio.
Deadline: In order to be eligible
for Art Talent Scholarships, all materials must be received by February
1.
THE PORTFOLIO REVIEW
A portfolio is required for all students who wish to pursue
an Art major or minor and should contain a minimum of fifteen examples
of work. Three-dimensional work should be submitted by slides labeled
with the applicants name. Drawings from observation should
be emphasized. Portfolios may be reviewed at a scheduled NPDA (National
Portfolio Day Association) Portfolio Day held at various locations.
Portfolio Reviews are also held by appointmentwith the Art Department
faculty.
Transfer students should include work from courses they wish to
transfer. For example, if students expect to transfer credit for
a painting class, the portfolio should include paintings from that
class. Several scholarships are awarded to qualified undergraduate
Art majors for excellent portfolios. The Christo Scholarship is
a special award for students who show excellent potential in art.

The vision that guides the Saint Rose Art Education
program is that the best art educator is an artist first, who then
becomes a teaching professional capable of effectively linking the
content and practice of art with the theory and practice of teaching.
We expect our students to learn to regard their teaching as an extension
of the creative process, an art form in itself.
