Mathematics 7-12 Education

The mathematics program at The College of Saint Rose will provide you with the knowledge and skills that you need to be competitive in our highly technological society. Now, more than ever, it is important that you have the ability to understand and interpret technology. The mathematics program at Saint Rose will make you a marketable commodity by training you in a variety of areas including algebra, geometry, computer science and physics, enabling you to enter a career where you will confidently put your abilities into practice.

If your goal is to teach junior or senior high school students, the mathematics 7-12 education major is for you. According to Occupational Outlook Quarterly (Spring 2000, p. 16), average employment of secondary school teachers is expected to increase faster than average and the secondary education program at Saint Rose is ranked as one of the top teacher education programs in New York state, due to our high Teacher Certification Exam passage rate.

THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
When you study math at The College of Saint Rose, you have a variety of program options. You may:
  • Major in mathematics;
  • Major in mathematics 7-12 secondary education; or
  • Major in any one of a variety of interdisciplinary
    study programs involving mathematics, including
the business/mathematics option, the physical science/mathematics option or the computer sciences/mathematics option.

3+2 Engineering Program
When you participate in the 3 + 2 Engineering Program you earn two degrees over a period of five years—a bachelor of arts degree from Saint Rose in mathematics and physical science and a bachelor of science degree in engineering from an affiliated college, including Alfred University, Clarkson University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or Union College.

OUR MENTORING FACULTY
The Mathematics Department at The College of Saint Rose is characterized by a concerned and dedicated faculty that builds mentoring relationships with students through small class sizes. Our faculty members belong to several professional organizations including the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State; Mathematical Association of America; Association of Women in Mathematics; and American Mathematical Society.

FACILITIES
Computerized Math Classroom
The Math Department prides itself on being at the forefront of mathematics education and the use of technology in teaching mathematics. The College’s computerized math classroom is equipped with the type of technology and soft-
ware that you will likely see in graduate school or in the workplace after graduation. Students use this facility for study or preparation of homework assignments when no classes are in session.

Math Tutoring Lab
If you are struggling with a complex mathematical equation, you will find the support that you need at the College’s Math Tutoring Lab. The lab is staffed by students who may have wrestled with the same concepts at one time or another. Visits to the lab are free and assistance is offered at convenient hours. A helpful reference library is housed in the lab, which provides you with materials for use in research projects. The Math Tutoring Lab also is a job opportunity for some students. If you enjoy helping others and are deemed eligible for a work-study position, you may consider becoming a tutor in the math lab.

FIELD EXPERIENCE
Mathematics 7-12 education majors prepare for the demands of the classroom by completing a required, full-semester student teaching assignment. All students are encouraged to complete an internship tailored to their specific interests in math.

CAREERS
When you graduate from Saint Rose with a degree in mathematics you will have a wide range of professional career choices, and, because of the pervasive nature of mathematics, you will be prepared for employment in industry, government, or teaching. Mathematics 7-12 education graduates have accepted a variety of teaching jobs—from seventh-grade algebra to advanced placement calculus. If you can see yourself as a businessperson, cost estimator, banker, statistician, actuary, computer systems analyst, engineer, or teacher, then the Saint Rose mathematics program is right for you.

GRADUATE STUDY
Our math graduates are well prepared for advanced study in mathematics, medicine, chemistry, law and accounting and have been accepted to graduate programs at a variety of institutions, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Minnesota, and Boston University. Mathematics 7-12 education graduates must complete a master’s degree within three years of teaching under certification.

MODERATE PRICE AND AGGRESSIVE FINANCIAL AID
The College of Saint Rose has one of the lowest tuitions of all New York state private colleges and we offer a variety of scholarships, including multicultural and academic talent. More than 90% of our students receive several forms of financial aid.

Insight into our department

by

Carmen Artino,
associate professor of mathematics

As a faculty, we attempt to
demonstrate virtues of mathematics to our students through the mathematics we do and through the mathematics we require our students to do. We hold our students to high standards. Our students know this, but they also know that, as a faculty, we understand the
demands that mathematics
makes on them. Our small class sizes allow us to give our students the personalized attention they may need to meet the standards we set for them and to be successful in mathematics.

A former student (in the statement below) acknowledges our efforts.

The Saint Rose Mathematics Department has given me a competitive edge in today’s high-tech market place. Now working as a software engineer for MapInfo, one of the country’s top 100 software companies, I find myself utilizing the skills and knowledge that my Saint Rose professors taught me in every project I work on. The combination of a strong theoretical background with modern computer techniques to solve mathematical problems has proven to be invaluable.

Jason Bryer, '99, software engineer, MapInfo Corporation
